The City of Malibu is interested in contracting with a highly qualified consulting firm experienced in lighting and photometric to provide plan check and inspection services. Commercial, residential, and institutional properties’ exterior lighting must comply with the Malibu Dark Sky Ordinance to protect the local environment and community quality of life from light pollution. Title 17 (Zoning) of the Malibu Municipal Code, Chapter 17.41 regulates outdoor lighting through the addition of comprehensive, citywide outdoor lighting standards. Among other requirements, all outdoor light fixtures must be fully shielded, directed downward, and are not to exceed 3000 Kelvin and certain levels of light trespass. Light fixtures on residential properties must also not exceed 850 lumens.
The objectives of the Dark Sky Outreach and Implementation are to:

Utilize existing information and methodologies to the extent feasible;
2.
Consider work being conducted by International Dark Sky Association and other jurisdictions and entities;
3.
Be specific to the development process in the City of Malibu;
4.
Be designed to be easily understood and informative to the public and stakeholders that are not familiar with the technical details.
