Description:

The compounding effects of long-term drought and climate change are resulting in hydrologic changes to habitats on which native amphibians rely. Drought conditions can directly impact native frog species via reductions in the water level, loss of surface water earlier in the water year, and poorer water quality. Less water availability and more rapid drying of aquatic habitats is especially detrimental in breeding and rearing locations where desiccation or isolation of larvae can increase the risk of mortality. Therefore, collecting early life stages is   necessary to prevent complete loss of cohorts among populations of concern. Captive rearing provides one of the best options currently available to increase the odds of survival for larval frogs that require intervention in the event of stranding and habitat desiccation. Captive rearing involves collecting early life stages, bringing individuals into an accredited conservation facility, raising the frogs to adulthood under conditions that mimic those in the wild, and then releasing the mature individuals back into their native habitat.
