Description

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (hereinafter called “LLNS”) is seeking sources for Advanced Helical Generator (AHG) Coils for use in Explosive Flux Compression Generator experiments. These Coils are approximately 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter and 500 lbs.

They are wound from .375” copper wire in a precisely prescribed winding pattern. The pitch of the winding is specified to change at particular axial lengths along the Coil; this is critical to the Pulsed Power performance of these Coils. In addition, the wire bifurcates 14 times along the length of the winding such that the winding begins with 2 wires started 180 deg apart and ends with 16 wires.

Once the winding is complete, structural elements are added to the Coil to create a mold, and the copper wires are potted in a dielectric material which prevents electrical breakdown during device operation. Cracks and voids in the potting therefore must be minimized. The design does not specify a particular potting material, however the properties of the potting material most critical to the electrical function of the device are large dielectric strength, large density, and low dielectric constant.

These Coils have been manufactured successfully in the past, and LLNS is looking for a new supplier. LLNS is able to share details about how they were constructed in the past, but some manufacturing development work is expected from suppliers. More information is available in supporting documentation.

The initial award would be for one (1) Coil, however, upon delivery and successful operation of the Coil, a follow-on award for up to ten (10) Coils are probable.

Interested suppliers should submit detailed information on their qualifications and capabilities via e-mail to white260@llnl.gov.

Responses should include:

  • A proposal including cost and work breakdown along with roadmap to get from manufacturing development work to production of first Coil.

  • Projects similar in scope and size

  • Experience
